Destination: Delhi

Delhi  Delhi

About Delhi:

The capital of India has a fascinating history and a stimulating presence. Believed to be the legendary Indraprastha described in The "Mahabharata" epic, Delhi has been the seat of power for a number of dynasties, including the Rajputs, the Muslim invaders, the Afghans, the Tughlaqs, the Sayyaids, the Lodis and the Mughals, who continued the imperial line until the British days.

Description:

Old Delhi is famous for its historical sights. Here you will visit the Jama Masjid Mosque, India's largest, built in 1650 AD.
It is made by alternating vertical strips of red sandstone and white marble.

Past the mosque's northern gate lies the fabled Chandni Chowk (Moonlight square) where you will see the breathtaking Red Fort. It was built between1638 and 1648 by Shah Jehan, who also constructed the Taj Mahal. The Red Fort is famous for its delicately-carved inlay and royal chambers.

From the Red Fort, the tour will proceed to Raj Ghat - the cremation site of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation who died in 1948.

The next stop will be New Delhi, which includes a visit to Humayun's Tomb (built circa 1565 AD), followed by a drive past Safdarjang's Tomb (1753 AD) to visit the Qutab Minar, the world's tallest brick minaret. Built in 1193 AD, the tower is 73 meters high and tapers from a 15-meter diameter base to just 2.5 meters at the top. There are 399 steps leading to the top, and its walls display intricately carved quotations from the Koran, the holy book of the Muslims.

The Iron pillar is nearby, standing amid the ruins of the Quwat-ul-Islam mosque. The pillar has withstood the elements for more than 1,500 years; amazingly, it has remained rust-free for all that time.

The drive through New Delhi includes the Embassy area (Diplomatic enclave), Rashtrapati Bhawan (The President's House - circa 1929) and the Government buildings.

While touring holy sites, you will visit the Santhome Cathedral Basilica Church in Chennai. This is a sacred place, especially for Catholics. The name of Santhome Cathedral Basilica was derived from the name St. Thomas, a Roman Catholic archbishop. The church is one of only two in the world that is built over the burial place of an apostle.

Built in a typical neo Gothic style, one of the basilica's stained glass windows illustrates the divine meeting of St. Thomas with a resurrected Jesus Christ. A piece of St. Thomas' bone has been preserved in the church's crypt.
