Dr. Sanjiv KS Marya has been in the field of medicine and orthopaedic surgery
for almost 30 years and is currently working with Max Healthcare Institute
Limited, New Delhi as Director - Orthopaedics & Institute of Joint Replacement
Surgery.
EducationHe qualified his MBBS as the Best Graduate of Maharshi Dayanand University and
Medical College Rohtak. Dr. Marya then did his MS (Masters in Orthopaedic
Surgery) from PGI, Chandigarh with honors - being declared the Best Post
Graduate. Subsequently he took extensive training in the field through DNB
(Diplomat of National Board) and the prestigious M.Ch. degree from University of
Liverpool. He was awarded the fellowship of International College of Surgeons,
USA. He has recently completed a certificate course in Hospital Management for
Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad.
Areas of specialization
Joint Replacement Surgery for the joints of upper and lower limbs (Primary and
Revision) and Trauma Management based on AO Principles. He has also undergone
specialized training in these from several institutes abroad. The centers of
major learning for him have been Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Centre,
Chicago, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, Charnley Hip Centre,
Wrightington (England) and Kantonspittal, Chur (Switzerland), Napean Joint
Replacement Centre (Australia) and Motol University Hospital (Czech
Republic)..He was awarded the prestigious AO trauma fellowship to Switzerland.
Before joining Max Healthcare, Dr. Marya has worked as Director - Division of
Joint Replacement Surgery & Senior Consultant Orthopaedics at Apollo Hospital,
New Delhi, Royal Hampshire Country Hospital, Winchester (England); as Lecturer
and Consultant orthopaedic surgeon at University College of Medical Sciences,
Delhi, Senior Resident in Orthpaedics at AIIMS, Delhi and Junior Resident in
Orthpaedics at PGIMER, Chandigarh.
Academic ExcellenceDr. Marya has also written extensively on various issues in the field of
orthopaedics, with over 60 scientific papers published in National and
International journals. This includes a thesis on Excision Arthroplasty in
infected hips, published for University of Liverpool, UK and a chapter on
poliomyelitis in 'Surgical Disease in Tropical Countries', published by the
National Book Trust.
His work has also been cited in the 'Year Book of Orthopaedics, 1988',
'Campbell's Operative Orthopaedics' and 'Rockwood and Green's Fractures in
Adults'.
Dr. Marya has a passion for teaching and disseminating the knowledge he has
gained in all these years and has been conducting workshops and delivering
lecture at various institutes of repute. This includes over 150 sessions across
the world in USA, UK, Thailand Switzerland, Dubai, Philippines, Singapore,
Australia, South Korea, Pakistan, Nepal, China, Bangladesh, Czech Republic and
major Indian societies.
International experienceDr. Marya has also been invited to demonstrate live surgical techniques in
China, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Philippines bringing credit to
Indian Surgeons.
In the year 2002 he was the only person from India to be invited to deliver a
lecture at the prestigious Asian Joints Symposium, held in Philippines. He was
invited in June 2003 to lecture at Chicago, USA, to the American Association of
Physicians of Indian Origin.
Professional ExcellenceHis expertise has been well recognized by national and international bodies. He
is a Thesis supervisor and examiner for DNB (National Board of Examination). He
has been appointed as a teacher for the Arthroplasty Section of Indian
Orthopaedic Association Super Specialty Training Committee.
Dr. Marya Served the Indian Railways in Honorary capacity for five years and
helped to modernize the orthopaedics services at the Northern Railways Central
Hospital, New Delhi. He started state of art joint replacement and trauma
management and helped conduct three national level workshops on trauma and joint
replacement surgery at Railways Hospital.
Dr. Marya has been appointed as Honorary Visiting Professor of Orthopaedics by
Sri Ramachandra Medical College & Research Institute (Deemed University),
Chennai and Honorary Visiting Professor of Orthopaedics, Sri Devaraj Urs Medical
College Kolar, Karnataka. He was advisor to Himalayan Institute Hospital &
Medical College, Dehradun.
Dr. Marya currently is the Director of 'PFC Sigma Total Knee Replacement Fellowhship Programme' and
'World Orthopaedics Concern Joint Replacement
Fellowhship'. He trains and teaches surgeons from many parts of India and
neighboring countries in latest surgical and non surgical techniques. He is also
directing an international joint replacement programme. He was also the Chief
Investigator of a Multiple Centre Nationwide Study on Incidence on Deep Vein
Thrombosis in India.
Dr. Marya has been contributing to medical literature by way of being member of
editorial board of ten scientific journals; both National and International.
These journals are read by a large number of junior and senior doctors in India
and abroad.
He has performed more than 3000 joint replacements of Knees, Hips, Shoulders,
Toes and Finger joints. This includes primary and revision joint replacement
work. He has pioneered bilateral joint replacement of knee and hip joints i.e.
replacing both joints in one sitting. Dr. Marya has initiated the
unicompartmental (Half Knee) replacement and has done exclusive work on
fractures in joint replacement. He has also introduced resurfacing hip
replacement in this part of India and recently conducted three workshops on this
new techniques including live demonstration.
Dr. Marya has demonstrated on TV circuit live Knee, Hip including surface
replacement and Unicompartmental knee replacements on numerous occasions to
hundreds of surgeons as a teaching aid in many National and International
conferences and workshops.
He has not only disseminated knowledge and information in medical world, Dr.
Marya has written in, been quoted and cited in almost all major News papers and
magazines in the country. He has appeared on most TV channels informing the
public at large about problems of bones and joints, their prevention and cure.
Dr. Marya had the privilege of setting up the department of orthopaedics at
University College of Medical Sciences and GTB, Hospital, Delhi as a lecturer
and Head of Department from 1987-89. Subsequently, he was the first coordinator
of Department of Orthopaedics at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital in 1995-97.
He was presented the 'Distinguished Service Award' by Indian Medical
Association, New Delhi.
Currently as Director of Orthopaedics he is helping set up departments across
Max Healthcare in addition to a state of the art hi-tech institute of Joint
Replacement Surgery at the tertiary care hospital at Saket.
