Education
Dr. Virdi did his post graduation in General Surgery and obtained his MS from
the Govt. Medical College, Patiala. He then did his M.Ch in Cardiothoracic
Surgery from the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research,
Chandigarh.
Professional Excellence
In 1995 he joined the Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, Delhi as a Senior Consultant
- Cardiothoracic Surgeon and succeeded in setting up a world class unit. He
performed 2000 heart operations and 200 major thoracic procedures, over the next
six years, with results comparable to the best CTVS units in the world.
He returned to Australia in 2002, as a Senior Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon
and later joined the academic faculty as an Adjunct Associate Professor in the
James Cook University. When the opportunity of developing a Department of
Cardiothoracic & Vascular surgery of international standards came up at Max
Healthcare, he decided to take up the challenge.
International Experience
He proceeded to England as the British Heart Foundation Fellow in
Cardio-thoracic Surgery. He obtained his FRCS from Edinburgh University and also
an FRCS in Cardiothoracic Surgery from the Inter Collegiate Board. Senior
surgical career beckoned him to the Australian Heart and Lung Transplant unit at
St. Vincent's Hospital in Sydney, Australia. Besides, gaining expertise in the
surgical management of terminal heart and lung diseases, he obtained his
Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) as well.
Areas of Specialisation
Dr. Virdi's areas of expertise include: Adult Heart and lung surgery,
including transplantation of thoracic organs both heart and lungs. Coronary
Artery Surgery, Valvular Heart Disease in particular repair of the mitral valve,
arrhythmia surgery (especially for atrial fibrillation), aortic root surgery,
thoracic aortic dissections, aneurysms and lung surgery especially for cancer
remain his major areas of interest. He is also formally trained in 'Robotic
Heart Surgery'.
Academic Excellence
Dr. Virdi has published many articles in several peer reviewed journals and has
trained more than a dozen cardiothoracic surgeons who are now running successful
cardiac surgical programmes of their own.
